Admission and Application

Students who wish to enrol in a MSc program at Wageningen University must have:

  • At least a BSc degree (or equivalent) in a field of science relevant to the specific programme selected;
  • A GPA (Grade Point Average) for the BSc study of at least 7 (or 70% of the maximum of the scale);
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken (see English language proficiency); 
  • Good skills in mathematics and/or statistics;  
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook; use and structure of the Internet; RSI-prevention).

The above admission requirements apply to all MSc study programs at Wageningen University.

Specific admission requirements

There are no specifice requirements for this MSc program. The BSc degree should be in earth sciences, ecology, economy, policy or related fields. The student should have a good working knowledge of calculus and statistics.

Relevant foreign Bachelor degrees give possible admission. The Admission Board has to decide.

To study in Wageningen in an English-taught MSc program, it is essential that you speak, read and write fluently in English. All applicants except native speakers (USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the English part of Canada) must be able to provide recent evidence of their spoken and written command of English. For more information about the entry requirements and qualifications that are acceptable as evidence of proficiency in English, go to 'Admission requirements'. In addition to the entry requirements, all students (except native speakers) are required to undergo an assessment of their English language skills at the Wageningen University Language Services (formerly Centa) prior to the beginning of their study.

Admission procedure

The applicant must complete the application form and submit it with all necessary documents. The Admission Committee reviews the application based on an individual assessment of the applicant's academic record (curriculum, grade point average and final thesis report or research paper) and relevant work experience. The applicants will be informed of the Committee's decision by letter.

Students are admitted to the MSc program Climate Studies with a study period of 24 months, equal to 120 credits (ECTS (=European Credit Transfer System)). Depending on prior work experience, it may be possible for students to be exempted from the internship (24 credits), which is part of the programme. This exemption is only possible based on relevant working experience gained after obtaining the BSc degree. If you believe you should be excempted from the internship, you must state this and the reason for exemption on the application form.

Students in the last year of their BSc program may also apply for admission prior to their graduation. The Admission Committee can tentatively admit a student based on a transcript of his or her academic record, relevant research conducted by the student and the expected date of graduation, and an official letter from their home university stating that the student will have completed all the requirements of the degree program in due time. After graduation, students must submit the certificate prior to the start of the academic year.

Study contract

After admission to the MSc program, the study advisor conducts an intake interview with the student during which the abilities and desires of the student are surveyed. A selection of graduate courses will be compiled for each individual student in accordance with the desired thesis topic. The graduate courses the student has selected must be approved. The individual program, the already acquired competencies and the deficiencies will be stated in a study contract.

An evaluation of the student's study progress will take place after the second examination period. Students who have not met the requirements – as stated in the study contract – will be advised to discontinue their studies. Also it should be mentioned that extension of the study period will have consequences for the student.
